Castles, parks and prehistory
The Dordogne is known for its large number of castles. Some had a defensive role, therefore military, but most were dwellings. Near the Domaine de Grézelou, is the Château de Beynac, magnificently located on top of a rock with a breathtaking view of the Dordogne river. At the Château Les Milandes you enter the life of Josephine Baker. Very interesting also for little girls who like pretty dresses. We highly recommend the Château de Castelnaud. The catapults installed around the castle make history even more alive. There are theatrical performances and old trades are presented in the village and many regional products.
15 minutes from the Domaine de Grézélou, there are the Jardins de Marqueyssac. A garden laid out along the Dordogne with hiking trails, surprising corners, very playful passages for children. There is a restaurant with a beautiful view, games for children to play a little more, picnic tables, toilets and a refreshment bar.
The Périgord Noir is also known for its magnificent caves. The most famous is the Grotte de Lascaux, a replica of the original but also real. Other beautiful caves are the Gouffre de Padirac, the Gouffre de Proumeyssac and the Pech Merle caves. Closer to the Domaine de Grézélou, there are also the caves of Gourdon and Domme.
You will find many sites to visit within a 30-minute radius of the Domaine du Grézelou.
Horseback riding
As you can walk, cycle or mountain bike, you will find many places for a horse or donkey ride for children.
Hiking and cycling
In the surrounding area there is a large network of hiking trails, even directly accessible from the Domaine de Grézélou. These paths will take you through the woods, over the hills and into pretty villages and are well signposted, very visible and can be easily combined.
The region is also to be discovered by bike, it is a hilly and sometimes uneven terrain. 5 minutes from the Domaine de Grézélou, you access a circuit along the Céou. Near Sarlat you have a cycle path laid out on an old railway line. A very beautiful almost flat road. Mountain biking is also practiced in the woods, there are specially indicated circuits.
Gastronomy
The Périgord Noir is the region where gastronomy plays an important role. There are many regional products.
Goose and duck are known for their duck breast, confit and foie gras. The wines of Bergerac and Cahors have their specificities. And the cheeses are diverse and varied, especially the goat cheese is famous and excellent. The Périgord is also known for its walnuts. The Walnut Route will take you along the orchards to help you discover the Périgord walnut. Above all, taste the famous walnut cake! It is also the region of black gold, the Truffle, and the Agen prune, which is very tasty.
You can of course buy these products to cook them yourself, but there are also many good restaurants in the nearby area. We are of course here to advise you.
Canoeing
The Dordogne is an ideal place for a canoe trip. There are different places to start a beautiful descent. While you are sailing quietly on the water you can admire magnificent views, only possible from the water. During your trip, it is possible to stop at small beaches for a picnic or a swim. The Dordogne has a weak current, which makes the river attractive for young children.
A little further is the Vézère river, also very beautiful and with a livelier current. Here too there are different places to start a descent.
